UAE Has Own Operate Anti-Missile System (THAAD)

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be first country in the world apart from the U.S. to own and operate the advanced anti-missile system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), which has been developed by the American company Lockheed Martin, the Dubai-based newspaper reported.

The systems are deployed in Poland and in Israel, where American personnel operate them, whereas in the UAE, the Emiratis will operate the system. The system will include anti-missile interceptors, launchers, fire control and communications systems, radar and training.

Unlike the Patriot missile system, which has been deployed throughout the region since the days of the First Gulf War in 1991, THAAD is designed to offer protection both from short- and intermediate-range missiles both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

The most likely source of an attack on the UAE and the other Sunni Muslim states along the Gulf is Iran, and various Gulf countries have been seeking different options for increasing their defensive capabilities, said The Media Line’s defense analyst.
