PM Gilani Rules out Threat of Indian Airstrikes

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the common friends of Pakistan and India are making all-out efforts to lessen the tension between India and Pakistan.

Yousuf said there is no looming threat of India launching on aerial strike in Pakistan, adding that India is a responsible country and would not take resort to any such reckless action.

Yousuf Raza said the world diplomacy also proved instrumental in lowering the tension between the two countries.

The PM said India has not provided clear-cut proofs regarding Mumbai attacks and the alleged involvement of Pakistan-based people in the terror incidents.

However, Indian PM Manmohan Singh refused handing any such evidences to Pakistan, as according to him, it would be premature doing the same.

It should be mentioned that nearly all the spy agencies of the world spotted the signatures of homegrown hindu terrorism in the attacks, the hallmark of which is arson.

Yousuf Raza clarified that it would take time to get the bilateral relations normalized.

‘If the evidences were found that Pakistani soil was used in terrorist attacks in Mumbai, then appropriate action would be taken against the culpable in line with Pakistani laws,’ he observed.

He added, ‘We are making efforts to end the tense situation between the two countries.’

Watch Rab Ne Bana di Jodi only for Surinder

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma
Director: Aditya Chopra
Music: Salim-Suleiman

What does a woman want Sigmund Freud had famously asked. A mousy office drone Surinder Sahini, played by Shah Rukh Khan, asks the same question in Aditya Chopra's new film Rab Ne Bana di Jodi.

Surinder's wife Tani, played by debutant Anushka Sharma, replies that a woman wants a man who loves her more than anything else in the world.

Surinder loves his wife so much that he is willing to transform himself into a fictional character Raj, who is hipper, cooler and most critically, makes Tani laugh. Slowly she finds herself falling in love with her husband in disguise.

In life, this would probably mean years of marriage counseling and therapy but since this is a Yash Raj film, everyone lives happily ever after.

Aaja Nachle, also produced by YRF, had a sub-plot of a painfully boring husband joining the theatre to impress his wife. Aditya, who returns to direction after eight years, has stretched that track into an entire film, except here theatre is replaced by a dance contest.

Rab Ne starts off promisingly. Both Aditya and Shah Rukh have a great affection for Surinder. He is the best-written and best enacted character in the film. Shah Rukh plays him with a loving tenderness. The film is interesting as long as we are watching this super geek who is too timid to even knock twice on his wife's door.

Unfortunately none of the other characters match up. Surinder's alter ego Raj, the loud-but-good-natured Jat, becomes boring after the initial laughs. And Tani herself is a mystery. The film begins with her losing her father and fiancée but she never mentions them again.

Tani is willing to leave Surinder but then suddenly, after a visit to the Golden Temple, she starts to see the goodness in her husband. Newcomer Anushka is confident but she isn't sparkling enough to dazzle you so that you can bypass these holes in the character.

The premise of Rab Ne is illogical but even if you are willing to overlook the fact that Tani fails to recognise her own husband because he loses his moustache and gels his hair, the film is a frustrating experience.

Sporadic scenes play out nicely and Shah Rukh Khan works every acting muscle to bring conviction to this story but the overwhelming emotional inconsistency fractures the film.

As events unfold, you are constantly asking: why is this happening. Eventually then, Rab Ne is a disappointment. See it only for Surinder and what Shah Rukh does with him.

I have not got any gifts from Salman: Asin

MUMBAI: Bets are on. Can she knock Katrina Kaif and her ilk out of the top heroine race? We should know soon with the upcoming release of Ghajini. Till then, Asin sails smoothly through an interview with Hindustan Times. Or at least tries to.. read on

Is there a feeling of done-that-before while acting in a remake?

Not at all, there was a completely different team and set-up. Some changes have been made to appeal to a wider audience. In fact, I’d say it’s perfect for my first baby steps in Bollywood.

Did Aamir Khan ever prove to be overbearing? Or is that a silly question to ask?

(Supremely politically correct) It was a great pleasure to work with an experienced actor like him. He’s very passionate about his work.. simple and open to ideas. His involvement in a project is believed to be another word for ‘interference’.

Seems a portion was reshot in Panchgani at his say so.

He’s a director’s actor. Of course, he does give his creative inputs but he was never imposing. He’s a flexible person. We didn’t reshoot any song or scene. A small part was shot.. to fill a gap and avoid an edit jump.

Talk is that Jiah Khan called Aamir Khan up when she learnt that he was editing her role. Aren’t you worried, too, about how your role will shape up?

I completely trust the film’s makers. I don’t know about such talks. I’ve no issues with anyone. I shared a great working relationship with Jiah, too. I’m completely secure about the role I’ve done and the person I am.

Only Aamir Khan was present for the ‘first look’ of Ghajini. Apparently, you had a talk with him since he has allowed you to interact with the media now.

I’m just following the marketing and the promotion campaign which has been thought out by a team which knows the pros and cons of a strategy. Now that the film is releasing, I have something to talk about. What could I have said earlier?

Although Jiah Khan was present at the Jaane Tu.. premiere, you weren’t. Was it Aamir Khan’s diktat to keep you under wraps till Ghajini was complete?

I wasn’t around in Bombay.. so I couldn’t attend the premiere. You’ll have to ask Aamir if he wanted to keep me under wraps.

Okay, Ghajini has been delayed for quite a while. First Aamir Khan suffered an injury, then he was busy promoting Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu.. Don’t you feel lousy about declining other projects in the interim?

(Cuts in) It was worth the wait, in every way. Two months early or a month late, the delay won’t affect the audience response which matters finally.

Kangana Ranaut and Ayesha Takia were considered for the other role. Considering they’re already established here, you must have felt relieved that eventually Jiah Khan, relatively speaking a newcomer, was finalised.

Even if it were Kangana or Ayesha, I wouldn’t have felt insecure at all. It doesn’t matter if it’s Jiah or anyone else. She’s doing her role, I’m doing mine. I’ve no issues with Jiah.

How did London Dreams come your way? Did you have to consult Aamir Khan before signing it?

While working for Ghajini, I got a call from the producers and Vipul Shah. After I met them, I wanted to do the project. I didn’t have to consult Aamir.. nor were there any contractual restrictions.

After working with Aamir Khan, how was it working with an unpredictable Salman Khan?

It was exciting working with another Khan, a professional like Ajay Devgan and a cool director like Vipul. I’m looking forward to the next schedule.

Salman Khan seems to have taken a liking for you. He gave you a gift on Onam and you gave him a present on Eid.

How I wish that was true! But there has been no exchange of gifts. We weren’t shooting on Onam, in fact we were travelling. On Eid, we were shooting. So, I got no gifts from Salman, neither did I gift him anything in return.

Salman Khan, it’s said, is helping you to buy an apartment in Mumbai.

I’ve been in Mumbai for more than a year now. I moved into my house in Lokhandwala in January this year. So why should anyone help me to find another home? What would I do with so many homes?

Can you tell me about your Walt Disney-produced movie?

It’s a multi-lingual project. 19 Steps is being directed by Bharat Bala, with Kamal Haasan and a Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano.

After Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and ads with Saif Ali Khan and Zayed Khan, isn’t Shah Rukh Khan on your wish list?

It would be fabulous to work with Shah Rukh Khan if a project comes along.

Salman Khan appears to be the only guy you’ve been linked with. Apparently, Katrina Kaif is not too pleased with his growing friendship with you.

I find these reports funny. Those who spread such stories should become scriptwriters for a pukka Bollywood masala movie.

Pakistan Says India Must Give Evidence on Mumbai

Pakistan shuttered more offices of a charity allegedly linked to the Mumbai attack but said it cannot prosecute key suspects unless India shares evidence ” a sign of Islamabad’s effort to ease international pressure while avoiding a domestic backlash. Successful cooperation between the neighbours in investigating the deadly terror attack could help the US raise a regional effort against al-Qaida and the Taliban along the Pakistan-Afghan border. `

`Pakistan wants to stay engaged with the international community,” said analyst Hasan-Askari Rizvi. “That means Pakistan will have to pursue these policies of banning groups and arresting certain people over some time to establish credibility.” The Interior Ministry said Friday that police have closed 65 Jamaat-ud-Dawa offices and arrested 31 activists.

Pakistan also put the charity’s leader, Lashkar founder Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, under house arrest and ordered banks to freeze the group’s assets. Still, the shaky civilian government must pay heed to the potential for a popular outcry if it acts too strongly. “Our own investigations cannot proceed beyond a certain point without provision of credible information and evidence pertaining to Mumbai attacks,” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said. Analysts say promoting peace between India and Pakistan could help quell Taliban and al-Qaida activities in Pakistan’s northwest by removing an incentive for the Pakistani military to nurture extremists as proxy fighters.

The US, whose troops in Afghanistan are threatened by militants across the border in Pakistan, has pressed the Pakistanis to cooperate with India. In New Delhi on Friday, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said it is imperative “these attacks be thoroughly investigated.” Some analysts say violence in Pakistan appears to have forged greater consensus in military and political circles that nurturing extremists threatens the viability of the nation. “This is an opportunity because the international community will support Pakistan if they take action,” Rizvi said. Mahesh Rangarajan, an Indian political analyst, noted the reaction of India’s government so far has been “very measured,” with top officials explicitly saying war is not an option. “But India has to share some evidence,” he said. “At some stage there has to be cooperation with Pakistan. If Pakistan’s action is serious, it will create some sense of trust.”

India, Pakistan Must Sign No 1st Attack Pact: Nawaz Sharif

NEW DELHI: If Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive in Mumbai, was indeed from Pakistan then it was time for Pakistan to take “very serious action” and let India know, said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.”

If a Pakistani name is being taken, a man who belongs to a place called Farid Kot or any other place, I think we should take very very serious notice of that. Not just notice, we should take serious action and we should let India know that, here, the action is now being taken against such elements. And it should also be a source of satisfaction to the Indian government, that yes, Pakistan is taking action,” Sharif said in response to media reports that Kasab was from Farid Kot, Pakistan.

“Pakistan must take action in a very transparent manner,” he said in an interview to Indian newsmagazine conducted at his farmhouse at Raiwind on the outskirts of Lahore.

In a significant proposal, he said there should be “a no first attack pact, a no first pact agreement, a no war pact between the two countries and this included both conventional and nuclear”. That, in his view, was the best for both countries and what they should be focusing on.

Dwelling on the troubled relations between the two countries, Sharif said if India had evidence to prove that Pakistani territory was used to export terror into Mumbai, “I think we should put our own house in order”.

Describing the “business of allegations and counter-allegations” between the two countries as devastating, Sharif said when he was prime minister “diplomats from both sides use to get beaten up and there was this tit for tat bashing”.

“I know that no civilized society will accept that - neither India nor Pakistan. These are the only two countries I have seen in my life, acting like this. We did move forward but after the Mumbai attacks, the relationship has moved backwards and that is very painful.

Polling underway For Rajender Nagar Assembly Constituency: Delhi Polls

New Delhi: Polling for the Rajender Nagar Assembly constituency in west Delhi, which was rescheduled after the death of BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi, began Saturday morning.

Voting began at 8 am in 160 polling stations of the constituency, an official at the Delhi Electoral Office said.

Asha Yogi, wife of the deceased BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi, is pitted against Ramakant Goswami of the Congress in this Delhi Assembly constituency.

Her candidature is being seen as an attempt by the party to cash in on a sympathy wave in the wake of Yogi’s death, who won three times from Rajendra Nagar.

Yogi (73), the saffron party’s original candidate from Rajendra Nagar, allegedly committed suicide on November 16 at his residence in south-west Delhi’s Inderpuri.

He was first elected to the assembly in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998 and 2003. In the last assembly polls, he had defeated Raj Kumar Kohli of Congress by 891 votes.

Only Exchange Firms’ Employees can Export Soft Currencies

KARACHI: As part of its ongoing drive to better regulate foreign currency transactions, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday made it mandatory for exchange companies to use only their employees to export soft currencies. The directives have been issued for registered exchange companies, which are allowed to export foreign currencies other than the US dollar, pound sterling, euro and UAE dirham.

It has also been made compulsory for these companies to finalize the deal with overseas entity (buyer) before the shipment of each export consignment. “System generated deal ticket (specifying consignee name, address, contract details, amount, exchange rate, etc) must be accompanied with each request for exporting permissible foreign currencies,” a SBP circular said.

These directives were part of the Central Bank’s “elusive” efforts to strengthen monitoring of foreign exchange dealings, as loopholes in relevant laws did not allow it to take effective measures. In the light of this development, an employee of an exchange company would now have to show his appointment letter at the SBP-custom manned booths at airports before he proceeded on to journey abroad, they said.

New Zealand 311-7 at tea against West Indies

DUNEDIN: Jesse Ryder was dismissed within sight of a maiden test century as New Zealand resumed its disrupted first innings on the third day of the first test against the West Indies on Saturday.

His loss minutes before tea contributed to a poor session for New Zealand which slid from 226-4 overnight to 311-7 at the interval of a rain-affected contest.

Ryder began the day at 54 not out and moved to 89, within two runs of his highest score in tests, before pulling a ball from Daren Powell to Shivnarine Chanderpaul square on the leg side.

Damp turf prevented play in the morning session Saturday, compounding problems caused on the first two days by rain and bad light which have cost the match almost five full sessions.

The umpires made two ground inspections in the morning session before calling for early lunch. After a further inspection and discussions with the captains, play began in the afternoon session.

Ryder and McCullum made relatively easy progress at first as West Indies captain Chris Gayle delayed the introduction of the second new ball for five overs. When the ball was taken, Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor bowled with renewed pace, found seam movement and troubled the batsmen.

Brendon McCullum, who had batted fluently against the old ball, was twice beaten off the seam by Edwards before edging a ball from Taylor to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin when he was 25. McCullum and Ryder had added 89 for the fifth wicket, the most productive partnership of the New Zealand innings.

All-rounder James Franklin, returning to the New Zealand team after an 18-month absence through injury, was partially a victim of the conditions when he was out for 7. Franklin stepped back to steer a ball from Edwards into the leg side, lost his footing when his back foot slipped and trod on his wicket, dislodging the bails. His dismissal, hit wicket, left New Zealand 289-6.

Ryder was dropped by Sewnarine Chattergoon at second slip off Edwards when he was 81 and provided the second instance in the match in which the Umpire Referral System was used. Early in the day he attempted to duck under a ball from Daren Powell which did not bounce and which struck him on the front pad as he kneeled in front of the stumps.

Ryder was ruled not out but Gayle referred the decision to television umpire Rudi Koertzen who confirmed the on-field umpire’s initial call. On the first day Daniel Flynn was given out lbw after Koertzen reversed the original decision.

At tea New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was 15 not out and Kyle Mills was yet to score.

South Australia Lock into Pak Pacer Tanvir For His Twenty20 Expertise

Lahore: South Australia is looking to employ Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir for its Twenty20 campaign, but according to the Daily Times, the move depends on his international commitments.

Tanvir starred for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year, and if the short-term deal goes through, he will step in for Younis Khan, who is helping out the struggling Redbacks in 2007-08, says a report on a cricket website.

Tanvir, 24, was the most successful bowler in the IPL with 22 wickets and hit the winning runs while batting with Shane Warne in the final.

South Australian officials are excited by the prospect of Shaun Tait working in tandem with Tanvir and said the deal was `cheap’.

“That was one of the real beauties of the deal … this guy is really coming for the opportunity,” Jamie Cox, South Australia’s high performance manager, told Sportal.

“It’s a very, very cheap deal for us. He was a bargain basement price for the IPL and took more wickets than anyone else … we believe he’s quality in this form of the game,” Cox added.

Australia’s domestic Twenty20 competition starts on Boxing Day and Tanvir will be available only if he is not picked in Pakistan’s squad for India’s tour - or the series is cancelled due to security concerns.

Tanvir has appeared in two Tests, 27 ODIS and 10 Twenty20 internationals.

South Australia is currently bottom of the one-day competition and second last in the Sheffield Shield. (ANI)

Condoleezza Rice urged India Not to Destabilise Region

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said that in her recent visit to India, she urged Indian leaders not to take actions that could destabilise the region.

“Anything that, in fact, would make the situation worse or might introduce unintended consequences is not going to be good for the stability of the region,” said Ms Rice. “It isn’t going to address what needs to be done, and that was also my message to India.”

Talking about her visit, Ms Rice told US television she talked with the Indians “about a response to the Mumbai attacks that would actually be commensurate with the goals. The goals are to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prevent a follow-on attack.”

She also urged Pakistan to ‘act forcefully’ to stem terror threats, although she acknowledged that the Pakistani government wanted to do the right things concerning terrorism.

She advised Pakistan to take at least some steps that might lead to those two goals, bringing the perpetrators to justice and getting India and Pakistan to cooperate to make certain that future attacks did not take place.

New Clashes in Athens, PM Says People Safe

Students pelted police with firebombs and stones in Athens in new clashes that first broke out over the police killing of a teenager. Students, angry at the shooting incident, low wages and unemployment, attacked police outside the parliament building on a seventh day of violence that has shaken the government. Riot police fired teargas in response.

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis pledged to guarantee the safety of its people and citizens. “Greece is a safe country,” he told a news conference in Brussels. Riots since the December 6 shooting of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos have destroyed hundreds of shops, banks and cars, rattled the conservative government and shaken investor confidence in the 240 billion euro economy ($315 billion) as the global crisis bites. Even as Karamanlis spoke in Brussels, about 5,000 protesters marched through Athens carrying banners saying:

“The state kills” and “The government is guilty of murder.” “We do not expect investors to forget this situation quickly,” said David Keeble, head of fixed income research at Calyon Bank. Greece’s debt almost equals its economic output. Karamanlis said Greece was weathering the credit crunch better than other EU members and sent a message to markets that, despite the crisis, the economy was solid. “Greece is covering and will (continue) to cover its borrowing needs smoothly,” he said.

The killing of Grigoropoulos ignited simmering anger over a series of scandals, unpopular reforms and misfired economic measures as the credit crunch reached Greece. Police sources say they are running out of teargas after using more than 4,600 capsules in the last week and have urgently contacted Israel and Germany for more stocks. “Everyone wants this government of murderers to fall. The government in four years has only carried out reforms against students,” said Maria Tsoupri, 22. “We don’t see a future. We have a future only through struggle.”

Pakistan Acting Aganist Militants in its Own Interest : US

WASHINGTON: The United States has said that Pakistan banned the Jamat-ud-Dawah for its own interest and not because Islamabad was warned by the Bush administration that it stood to be branded as a terrorist state.

State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack was asked to clarify a statement by the Defence Minister of Pakistan that Islamabad had to ban the Jamaat because if that hadn’t happened, it would have been branded a terrorist state.

“Is that the message the US has sent out?” McCormack was asked.

“No,” he replied.

“Pakistan did this because it saw it in its interest. As we have said many, many times over, the threat from violent extremists is as much a threat to Pakistani people and the Pakistani government as it is to anybody else. All that said, it’s a welcome step that they took,” he said.

US Drone strike Kills 7 in South Waziristan

WANA: Another missile strike, suspected to be from a pilotless U.S. drone, killed at least six residents of South Waziristan on late night Thursday, reported A Pakistan News.

The missile hit a house adjacent to a madrasa in Qazi Panga village near Azam Warsak town, say news reports, adding seven people were residing in the house out of six were killed on spot, while another was severely injured in the incident.

Residents of the village recovered the corpses from debris by their own amid fear and anger, as the US drones continued their flights following the strike.

It was the second strike by U.S. drone aircraft this month, after three people were killed in a similar attack in neighboring North Waziristan.

The latest strikes came amid growing tension between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India over deadly attacks on Mumbai last month.

Crackdown on Jamaat-ud-Dawa Continues

MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistani authorities shut offices and arrested scores of activists of an Islamic charity as international pressure mounted for firm action against militants blamed for the Mumbai attacks, news reports said on Friday.

Some 250 activists of the outfit have so far been arrested, reported A Pakistan News.

The overnight raids followed Pakistan announcing it would abide by a U.N. decision placing Hafiz Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, on its terrorism sanctions list of people and organizations linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Saeed, who founded Lashkar in 1990 and officially left it in 2001 just days before Pakistan banned it, has been put under house arrest, according to one of his spokesmen.

Three associates were also added to the U.N. list and will be subject to sanctions freezing assets and restricting travel, but a local news channels reported one of them is dead and another has been in a Saudi jail for the past three years.

An intelligence official told an England-based news agency that Maulana Masood Azhar, head of the Jaish-e-Mohammad group blamed with Lashkar for a 2001 attack on India’s parliament, was also detained.

One close aide of Azhar’s said: “I think they could have detained him to relieve pressure, but I don’t know the exact whereabouts of the Maulana.”

In various cities of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, police raided offices of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a charity regarded as a Lashkar front.

Police raided JuD offices in several cities including Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Lahore, Karachi and Quetta. A Jamaat spokesman said 100 workers were arrested in North West Frontier Province alone.

The Jamaat-ud-Dawa’s headquarters at a sprawling complex in the eastern town of Muridke appeared deserted. Officials said the office, schools and hospitals it ran there had shut on Dec. 4.

A spokesman for Pakistan’s central bank said late on Thursday that directives had been issued to banks to freeze JuD accounts and assets of the four men added to the U.N. sanctions list.

Television reports said the JuD would be banned though no official announcement has yet been made.

Chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa Hafiz Saeed put under house arrest

LAHORE: Govt. has placed the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Hafiz Muhammad Saeed under house arrest for a period of three months on Thursday.

The government of Pakistan has also started clamping down offices of JuD and other banned outfits across the country. According to well-placed sources, the JuD chief was put under house arrest for three months in Lahore and a contingent of police was deployed at his residence.

Police began closing the offices of Jamaat-ud-Dawa across the country after the UN Security Council on Thursday declared the organisation a terrorist group.

The assets of JuD and of the nine leaders have been frozen, the senior government official said, and their names will also be placed on the exit control list to prevent them from leaving the country.

The regional offices of Jamaat have also been sealed in Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Azad Kashmir.

War with Pakistan no solution: Pranab Mukherjee

NEW DELHI: War with Pakistan is “no solution” to the problem of militants using Pakistani soil to launch anti-India attacks, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday after demanding Pakistan hand over 40 people.

“We have given them lists of 40 persons not one, not 20 — lists of 40 persons and we have also pointed out that their denial is not going to resolve the issue,” Mukherjee told Indian parliament on Thursday.

Indian officials had previously demanded that Pakistan hand over 20 suspected militants, some of them linked to last month’s Mumbai attack in which 179 people were killed by gunmen that Indian police say are from Pakistan.

Asked by an angry lawmaker why India was not attacking Pakistan after so much proof of its complicity in fomenting trouble in India, Mukherjee replied: “That is no solution.”

“… if it is not followed to the logical conclusion — complete dismantling of the infrastructure facilities available from that side to facilitate terrorist attack, of banning the organisations — how does that help us?” he said.

India’s minister in charge of security on Thursday also said a major overhaul of the intelligence and policing capabilities was underway, including more spies and police, modern gadgets and the creation of a national investigation agency.

Navy worried over empty boats on TN coast

The Indian Navy is concerned over the arrival of empty boats, some with bullet marks, off Rameswaram coast recently, Vice Admiral Nirmal Kumar Varma, Vishakapatinam, in-Charge of Eastern Naval Command said on Thursday (December 11).

“This cannot be taken lightly. It is for the state police and the Centre to find out reasons for the arrival of these boats,” he told reporters in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He, however, said there was no threat from LTTE.

The Tamil Nadu police in a press release on Wednesday (December 10) said that “thorough investigations” revealed that the boats had apparently drifted from Sri Lanka due to the recent cyclone.

Vice Admiral Varma said the air Station at Uchipuli on the Tamil Nadu coast needs to be extended so that Dornier aircraft could land there. Steps would be taken to extend the runway at Uchipuli naval base, he said after visiting the naval base here.

He, however, said there was no need to expand the naval base at Rameswaram, as it had sufficient strength of personnel, ships and equipment to counter any threat. He also stressed the need for providing jetties for the fishermen’s boats so that it would be able to identify any outside boats being anchored.

Mumbai terrorist Kasab Says his Dad was Paid by terrorists to hand him over

Mumbai: The sole surviving terrorist that attacked Mumbai last week, killing about 195 people and injuring 295 others, has revealed that his father was paid by a Pakistan-based militant group to hand him over.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, a Pakistani national from Faridkot in Punjab province, said that his father, Amir, introduced him to a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander. The commander, known as “chacha” (uncle), paid his father, The Times quotes Kasab, as saying.

Security experts say that payment is one of three main recruitment tools used by Islamist extremists. The other two are the madrassas, or Islamic seminaries, scattered across Pakistan, and threats of violence, often made to the families of those being recruited.

It is thought that as many as 15 Indian officials are sitting in on the militant’’s interrogation, and many are leaking their interpretations of his responses to the media.

Others are speculating that the fact that Kasab apparently speaks fluent English indicates he is probably from Pakistan’’s relatively wealthy middle classes.

Experts also believe it is unlikely that a recruit who had been coerced would be sent on an attack of the scale of Mumbai.

“They would not send somebody who would compromise the mission,” Dr. Lakshman, of the Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management, said

Indian officials remain convinced that the attack on Mumbai bears the hallmark of Lashkar-e-Toiba, which was believed to be behind a 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament.

They also believe that Lashkar-e-Toiba does not act without the sanction of some part of the Pakistan government.

Officials are also concerned that five terrorist gunmen that have escaped after the carnage and could strike again.

The prospect of more killers has added to public anger at the Indian Government’s lax handling of the worst terror strike to hit the country in 15 years. (ANI)

Pakistan Involve, What You Think

What Indian media and US saying against Pakistan just look here.

THE MUMBAI TERRORISTS - They want to destroy Pakistan, too

The recent death and destruction in Mumbai, India, brought to my mind the death and destruction in Karachi on Oct. 18, 2007, when terrorists attacked a festive homecoming rally for my wife, Benazir Bhutto.

Nearly 150 Pakistanis were killed and more than 450 were injured. The terrorist attacks in Mumbai may be a news story for most of the world. For me it is a painful reality of shared experience. Having seen my wife escape death by a hairbreadth on that day in Karachi, I lost her in a second, unfortunately successful, attempt two months later.

The Mumbai attacks were directed not only at India but also at Pakistan’s new democratic government and the peace process with India that we have initiated. Supporters of authoritarianism in Pakistan and non-state actors with a vested interest in perpetuating conflict do not want change in Pakistan to take root.

To foil the designs of the terrorists, the two great nations of Pakistan and India, born together from the same revolution and mandate in 1947, must continue to move forward with the peace process.

Pakistan is shocked at the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. We can identify with India’s pain. I am especially empathetic. I feel this pain every time I look into the eyes of my children.

Pakistan is committed to the pursuit, arrest, trial and punishment of anyone involved in these heinous attacks. But we caution against hasty judgments and inflammatory statements.

As was demonstrated in Sunday’s raids, which resulted in the arrest of militants, Pakistan will take action against the non-state actors found within our territory, treating them as criminals, terrorists and murderers. Not only are the terrorists not linked to the government of Pakistan in any way, we are their targets and we continue to be their victims.

India is a mature nation and a stable democracy. Pakistanis appreciate India’s democratic contributions. But as rage fueled by the Mumbai attacks catches on, Indians must pause and take a breath. India and Pakistan - and the rest of the world - must work together to track down the terrorists who caused mayhem in Mumbai, attacked New York, London and Madrid in the past, and destroyed the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in September. The terrorists who killed my wife are connected by ideology to these enemies of civilization.

These militants did not arise from whole cloth. Pakistan was an ally of the West throughout the Cold War. The world worked to exploit religion against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan by empowering the most fanatic extremists as an instrument of destruction of a superpower. The strategy worked, but its legacy was the creation of an extremist militia with its own dynamic.

Pakistan continues to pay the price: the legacy of dictatorship, the fatigue of fanaticism, the dismemberment of civil society and the destruction of our democratic infrastructure. The resulting poverty continues to fuel the extremists and has created a culture of grievance and victimhood.

The challenge of confronting terrorists who have a vast support network is huge; Pakistan’s fledgling democracy needs help from the rest of the world. We are on the frontlines of the war on terrorism.

We have 150,000 soldiers fighting Al Qaeda, the Taliban and their extremist allies along the border with Afghanistan - far more troops than NATO has in Afghanistan.

Nearly 2,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives to terrorism in this year alone, including 1,400 civilians and 600 security personnel ranging in rank from ordinary soldier to three-star general.

There have been more than 600 terrorism-related incidents in Pakistan this year. The terrorists have been set back by our aggressive war against them in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and the Pashtun-majority areas bordering Afghanistan. Six hundred militants have been killed in recent attacks, hundreds by Pakistani F-16 jet strikes in the last two months.

Terrorism is a regional as well as a global threat, and it needs to be battled collectively. We understand the domestic political considerations in India in the aftermath of Mumbai. Nevertheless, accusations of complicity on Pakistan’s part only complicate the already complex situation.

For India, Pakistan and the United States, the best response to the Mumbai carnage is to coordinate in counteracting the scourge of terrorism. The world must act to strengthen Pakistan’s economy and democracy, help us build civil society and provide us with the law enforcement and counterterrorism capacities that will enable us to fight the terrorists effectively.

Benazir Bhutto once said that democracy is the best revenge against the abuses of dictatorship. In the current environment, reconciliation and rapprochement is the best revenge against the dark forces that are trying to provoke a confrontation between Pakistan and India, and ultimately a clash of civilizations.
