Islamabad: A suicide bomber on Wednesday killed at least four soldiers in Pakistan’s north-western district of Charsadda near the Afghan frontier, a police official said.
The bomber rammed his explosive-laden motor rickshaw into a vehicle transporting Frontier Corps (FC) paramilitary troops in the Pir Qala area bordering the lawless Mohmand tribal region.
“According to initial reports, four FC men were killed in the explosion while half a dozen wounded were shifted to the hospital,” a local police official, Mohammad Zaheer, said.
Military reinforcements cordoned off the area following the blast and a volley of shots was heard in the vicinity, he added.
Government troops last month swooped into the Charsadda district amid media reports that the security forces were planning a major offensive against Islamist insurgents holed up in Mohmand.
Pakistan’s tribal region is considered a safe haven for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, who regularly infiltrate into Afghanistan to carry out attacks on international troops fighting the US-led war against the militants. (dpa)
