Voting began at 8 am in 160 polling stations of the constituency, an official at the Delhi Electoral Office said.
Asha Yogi, wife of the deceased BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi, is pitted against Ramakant Goswami of the Congress in this Delhi Assembly constituency.
Her candidature is being seen as an attempt by the party to cash in on a sympathy wave in the wake of Yogi’s death, who won three times from Rajendra Nagar.
Yogi (73), the saffron party’s original candidate from Rajendra Nagar, allegedly committed suicide on November 16 at his residence in south-west Delhi’s Inderpuri.
He was first elected to the assembly in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998 and 2003. In the last assembly polls, he had defeated Raj Kumar Kohli of Congress by 891 votes.
