New Zealand 311-7 at tea against West Indies

DUNEDIN: Jesse Ryder was dismissed within sight of a maiden test century as New Zealand resumed its disrupted first innings on the third day of the first test against the West Indies on Saturday.

His loss minutes before tea contributed to a poor session for New Zealand which slid from 226-4 overnight to 311-7 at the interval of a rain-affected contest.

Ryder began the day at 54 not out and moved to 89, within two runs of his highest score in tests, before pulling a ball from Daren Powell to Shivnarine Chanderpaul square on the leg side.

Damp turf prevented play in the morning session Saturday, compounding problems caused on the first two days by rain and bad light which have cost the match almost five full sessions.

The umpires made two ground inspections in the morning session before calling for early lunch. After a further inspection and discussions with the captains, play began in the afternoon session.

Ryder and McCullum made relatively easy progress at first as West Indies captain Chris Gayle delayed the introduction of the second new ball for five overs. When the ball was taken, Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor bowled with renewed pace, found seam movement and troubled the batsmen.

Brendon McCullum, who had batted fluently against the old ball, was twice beaten off the seam by Edwards before edging a ball from Taylor to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin when he was 25. McCullum and Ryder had added 89 for the fifth wicket, the most productive partnership of the New Zealand innings.

All-rounder James Franklin, returning to the New Zealand team after an 18-month absence through injury, was partially a victim of the conditions when he was out for 7. Franklin stepped back to steer a ball from Edwards into the leg side, lost his footing when his back foot slipped and trod on his wicket, dislodging the bails. His dismissal, hit wicket, left New Zealand 289-6.

Ryder was dropped by Sewnarine Chattergoon at second slip off Edwards when he was 81 and provided the second instance in the match in which the Umpire Referral System was used. Early in the day he attempted to duck under a ball from Daren Powell which did not bounce and which struck him on the front pad as he kneeled in front of the stumps.

Ryder was ruled not out but Gayle referred the decision to television umpire Rudi Koertzen who confirmed the on-field umpire’s initial call. On the first day Daniel Flynn was given out lbw after Koertzen reversed the original decision.

At tea New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was 15 not out and Kyle Mills was yet to score.
