Supreme Court Verdict on Behest of Zardari: Nawaz Sharif
RAIWAND: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday reiterated that Supreme Court verdict regarding the ban on Sharif brothers for contesting polls, came out “on the behest of president Zardai” adding the decision should be withdrawn.
In his interview to an Arab TV, the chief of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) said that no concrete suggestions came out to steer the country out of existing political crises, however, he said, for a peaceful solution, he had informed the ruling quarters of his proposals.
Sharif said justice could not be ensured in the absence of a free judiciary. The governor’s rule in Punjab province could have been averted, he added.
No one accepts today’s supreme court of Pakistan as people think its a “Kangaroo Court” and the judges were loyal of just a single person, Nawaz opined.

Pak Security Were Recived Threat in January: Lahore Attack
Lahore’s local security agencies had been alerted in advance about a threat to the Sri Lankan cricket team but the Pakistani authorities did not give much credence to this.
Sources said on January 22, Pakistan’s security services were alerted by intelligence inputs that the visiting Sri Lankan team could come under jihadi attack. The intelligence was specific enough to point out that they could be targeted either in their hotel or on the way to Gaddafi Stadium.
The team followed regular security procedures which were no match for the terrorists. Pakistan is not unique. Indian security agencies had also gathered sufficient intelligence about the Mumbai attacks, that it would be launched from the sea etc, at least a couple of months before the actual attack. But this intelligence was not acted upon, either by the Maharashtra state or the hotels, leading to one of the bloodiest terrorist attacks India has ever witnessed.
The July 7, 2008 attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul too had been predicted by intelligence inputs - so there is clearly a tradition of not obeying intelligence warnings of impending threats.
On Wednesday too, Chris Broad, an ICC match referee, went on record to say that the police simply vanished when their bus came under attack. “There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere,” Broad said after his arrival back in the UK. “They had clearly left the scene and left us to be sitting ducks.”
He said their bus was stationary after the driver was killed by terrorists. Broad was quoted as saying that Pakistan had promised “presidential-style security” but “it was not there when we needed it”.
However, Pakistan’s cricket authorities have refuted Broad’s account. They said the convoy transporting the Sri Lankan team and cricket officials was surrounded by police vehicles at the front, rear and sides, but travelled the same route each day.
Video footage from surveillance cameras showed several attackers apparently escaping along a deserted side street on motorcycles while carrying weapons. Three of them were also shown walking casually down the middle of the street, apparently in no hurry to escape, indicating they did not believe police were in the area or hunting them.

War Trend Will Soon Face Its End
A strategy to end all wars
History has it that there was not yet a single year without war in history known to a mankind, and that war has been fought since time immemorial. Therefore, the biggest question today would be: Is it really possible to end wars? Throughout our human history we heard many politicians, leaders and rulers saying that there will be no more wars and that things will change, but nothing has changed. Even today, there are around thirty ongoing wars in the world.
Consequently, how and who will end wars: the United Nations, Non-Government Organizations, International Laws and Conventions, who?
The United Nations was established to stop wars between countries, to provide a platform for dialogue, and to maintain international peace and security, and justice. The UN has very noble charters and articles; however, the UN is not capable to maintain international peace and security. In one word; the UN is not influential and strong enough because some Member States do not respect the UN Charters.
Why the UN is not capable to maintain international peace and security? Perhaps, statements by the former US President George W. Bush and former US Ambassador to the UN John R. Biden will provide some answer. President Bush said; “free nations will not allow the United Nations to fade into history as an ineffective, irrelevant debating society.” The Ambassador Biden said; “There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is only the international community, which can only be led by the only remaining superpower, which is the United States.”
Because of such statements and hegemony of some Member States to get their will throughout, the UN is not able to prevent wars; it can only assist Member States in humanitarian issues and try to maintain peace with peacekeeping missions, after all military operations ends. The only serious resolutions issued by the UN will be visible when the Security Council passes its power to the General Assembly, and therefore, when the General Assembly get serious in its business and start working as one voice to bring peace to the world.
When it comes to NGO’s, well, they are private institutions which are not directly a part of a structure of government, but relies significantly on funding from governments, individual donors, foundations, corporations. Currently, there are over 5 million NGO’s around the world, out of which 0.1% is actually doing their jobs in terms of supporting and helping people in distress. Other 99.9% can be divided in two categories: ones who lobby for their financiers and others who do nothing at all, just waiting for easy money to come.
Pertaining to the International Laws and Charters, they are more or less associated with the United Nations, and without the UN they do not stand any chance of survival.
Then, how to prevent wars?
We saw that the international organizations and laws are not able to do anything serious to prevent wars; therefore, the answer for this global phenomenon lies in the domestic laws, not international. In order to prevent future wars we should focus our attention on domestic issues first. In relation, here are some possible solutions how to prevent wars, trough terms called the Head of State and Referendum.
According to definition, the Head of State is the general term for the individual or collective office that serves as the chief public representative of a monarchic or republican nation-state, federation, commonwealth or any other political state. In terms of protocol, states are distinguished as monarchy or republic, depending on the style of their head of state.
Different state constitutions establish different political systems, but four major types of heads of state can be distinguished:
1. the non-executive head of state system, in which the head of state does not hold any executive power and mainly plays a symbolic role on behalf of the state;
2. the parliamentary system, in which the head of state possesses executive power but the exercise of this power is done on the advice of a cabinet;
3. the presidential system (sometimes called ‘imperial’), in which the head of state is also the head of government and actively exercises executive power; and,
4. the semi-presidential system, in which the head of state shares exercise of executive power with a head of government.
In everyday life, the Head of State is a legal representative of the people-citizens of the country in which he/she was elected. His/hers duties, therefore is to serve and work in the best interest of the nation which he/she represents as the Head of State.
Consequently, if the Head of State-collective office wishes to start a war and think that war is in the best interest of the nation, than it behooves on them to go to that same war. There is no better way for the Head of State-collective office to justify war than to be personally involved in one. They should not hide behind their desks and behind diplomatic immunities while soldiers die on the battle field, they should go and fight and it should be their honor.
This is nothing new to the world; many years ago Head of States and rulers went to wars to fight, for example: Genghis Khan, Saladin, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra VII, Julius Caesar, Napoleon I, Adolf Hitler, among many others. Maybe, when they find themselves in the middle of war and on the line of fire, then they will realize how wars are dangerous and hopefully end them.
Since there is no chance that we will see a Head of State brave enough to go to war, let’s see more appropriate and reasonable solution to prevent the war trend, called referendum.
A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal. This may result in the adoption of a new constitution, a constitutional amendment, a law, the recall of an elected official or simply a specific government policy.
In contemporary days, war can be declared and started with the decision of the Head of State-Monarch-collective office, however, that needs to be changed. Before the government decides to engage in war, government should ask citizens for their approval. Approval to engage in war should be asked trough the War Referendum. It is nothing personal, however, certain decisions are best taken out of the hands of governments and determined directly by the people, especially when it comes to war.
Referendum is the best way to identify the spirit of the nation, and many countries have used it, for example: In Venezuela, in the Venezuelan recall referendum of 2004 voters determined whether or not Hugo Chavez, the current President of Venezuela, should be recalled from office. In Spain, in 1986 referendum approved Spain’s membership to NATO. In Brazil, in 2005 referendum, 122 million voters decided to continue to allow the sale of firearms in Brazil. In Iraq, two years after the United States-led invasion, the current Constitution of Iraq was approved by referendum.
There is also one very popular referendum, called the independence referendum, a type of referendum in which citizens of one territory would decide whether that territory should become independent country. There were many successful independence referendums in the past, such as: 1990 Slovenia independence referendum, 1991 Croatian, Macedonian, Georgia and Ukraine independence referendum, 1993 Eritrean independence referendum, and most recent 2006 Montenegrin independence referendum, among others.
Also, here is a list of some expected independence referendums which will be held in the near future, such as: Scottish (the UK), Bougainville (Papa New Guinea), New Caledonia (France), Quebec (Canada), Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina), among others.
Still, there are some countries that do not like to use referendums, such as: Canada, the United States, Chile, the Netherlands, among others. Imagine who many lives would be saved if the US government had used a referendum before engaging in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
Some politicians say that referendums are too expensive to be held, but are they. For example, in Denmark referendums usually happen every time when new treaties of the European Union have to be approved. Therefore, referendums are not expensive, wars are.
We can see that many important issues are determined by the people trough referendums, but never when it comes to wars. Why is there no war referendum? Because there is no nation in the world which will vote in favor of war and government officials knows that.
Maybe, this is the time when we the people should take the matters into our own hands and stop this war trend since nobody else can.

Pakistan Spy Agency Behind 26/11: India
India has for the first time directly accused Pakistan’s powerful military intelligence agency the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of involvement in last year’s Mumbai attacks.
“The perpetrators planned, trained and launched their attacks from Pakistan, and the organisers were and remain clients and creations of the ISI,” Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said in a speech in Paris on Thursday that was picked up by the Indian media.
In January, India handed Pakistan what it said was evidence linking “elements” in Pakistan to the November attacks on India’s financial capital, in which 10 gunmen killed 165 people during a 60-hour siege.
Delhi has blamed the attacks on the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is active in Indian-ruled Kashmir, but the Pakistan-based organisation has denied responsibility.
Earlier this week Pakistani Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani assured India that his government would hand over the results of its own investigation into the attacks soon. Pakistan has confirmed that the lone surviving Mumbai gunman, now in Indian custody, is one of its citizens. But it has insisted that the attackers were “non-state actors.”

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Wednesday, vowed to fight terrorism and warned Pakistan in indirect words to stop spreading the menace or face a befitting reply.
Addressing a public rally in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Sonia said the “neighbouring country” was trying to harm India and destroy her communal amity.
“The neighbouring country has the malicious intention of dividing our country and destroying its fraternity. The people of India will respond to this,” she said without naming Paksitan.
“Indira Gandhi died fighting terrorism. United, we will give terrorism a strong reply,” she told a gathering, which included a large chunk of tribals. She further said terrorism is a huge challenge before the country and “we will defeat it”.
Hinting at the recent attacks on migrant workers in Maharashtra, she lauded the people of Dadra and Nagar Haveli for “loving and accepting outside workers” who came to work in the Union Territory.
Underlining the achievements of the UPA Government at the Centre under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she stressed that it was pro-people. “We have waived off agriculture loans worth Rs 71,000 crore, which benefited four crore farmers. We have given scholarships to tribal children, and also cleared forestland for cultivation. We have reduced the prices of petrol and diesel twice,” she said.
She went on to say that tribals and villagers stand to benefit from the civilian nuclear deal, which the UPA government signed with the US, through the prospect of uninterrupted power supply.
Shops, schools, markets and even factories remained closed in the city till the afternoon in connection with the rally. Silvassa is an industrially developed city with about 2.2 lakh voters. It has a large population of migrant labourers.

Israel again strikes Gaza; 95 corpses recovered
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military carried out an air strike against a so-called rocket launching squad in the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday in the first such incident following a unilateral truce, the army said.
"We carried out a strike against a rocket launching squad in Beit Hanun," a spokesman told reporters. "It was the same squad that launched (rockets) into Sderot this morning."
Earlier a handful of rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel, with at least four of them landing inside the Jewish state without causing any injuries, the army said.
Israeli troops and Palestinian fighters also exchanged their first shots in Gaza on Sunday, puncturing a tenuous ceasefire after the Jewish state halted a deadly war on the Hamas rulers of the enclave.
As the army carried out its first air raid on militants firing rockets, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned that the unilateral truce Israel had begun hours earlier was fragile and was being constantly reassessed.
"The government's decision allows Israel to respond and renew the fire if our enemy in the Gaza Strip continues its strikes," he said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
"This morning they again proved that the ceasefire is fragile and it has to be reassessed on a minute by minute basis," he said. "We hope that the fire ends. If it continues, the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) will respond. It is prepared and deployed to do so."
Officials said that the clashes did not necessarily mean a return to all-out fighting.
"There will no doubt be isolated incidents," Israeli Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer said. "It will take two to three days for everything to end completely, for Hamas to understand that we are now in a new scenario."
Hamas, the Islamist movement that has ruled Gaza for a year and a half, has warned that it would not accept the presence of a single Israeli soldier in Gaza.
"We have clearly said: if Israeli troops remain in Gaza, this will be a wide window for the resistance against the occupation," Osama Hamdan, the group's representative in Lebanon, said in an interview with Al-Jazeera television.
On the ground, Palestinian medics took advantage of the relative lull in the fighting to descend on areas which had been inaccessible due to heavy clashes.
At least 95 bodies, including several children, were pulled from the rubble in northern Gaza, ARY OneWorld reported.
As Hamas congratulated the Palestinians on "victory" from mosque loudspeakers, Gaza residents cautiously ventured out into the streets to inspect the rubble that was once their homes.
"We congratulate all the Palestinian people after the victory in the fight with the enemy," bellowed a voice from a Hamas mosque in central Gaza City.
Olmert announced late on Saturday that Israel was unilaterally silencing its guns after an unprecedented 22-day-long campaign in Gaza, which killed at least 1,300 people, including more than 400 children, wounded another 5,300, and left large swathes of the territory in ruins.
On the Israeli side three civilians and 10 soldiers were killed in combat and rocket attacks.
"We have reached all the goals of the war, and beyond," Olmert said.
During the course of the war, schools, hospitals, UN compounds and thousands of homes all came under attack with the Palestinian Authority putting the cost of damage to infrastructure alone at 476 million dollars.

Ceasefire Declared By Israel in Gaza
GAZA: Israeli forces started to implement a unilateral ceasefire in the Gaza Strip early Sunday after a 22-day fierce offensive on the Hamas-ruled area.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared a unilateral ceasefire in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, beginning from 2 a.m. (0000 GMT) Sunday. The declaration came shortly after Israeli
security cabinet voted in favor of a unilateral ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel forces Cast Lead Operation had been going on in the past three weeks, killing around 1,300 Palestinians.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared the truce, beginning from 2 a.m. (0000 GMT) Sunday, saying the goals of the operation in Gaza had been “met in full.”
“We reached all of our objectives in Gaza,” Olmert told a press conference in Tel Aviv, adding Hamas has been dealt a heavy blow by Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and Hamas leaders are now in hiding.
But he ordered troops to remain in the enclave and return fire if they came under attack.
Minutes after Olmert declared the unilateral ceasefire in Gaza, Hamas movement’s armed wing
al-Qassam Brigades sent a statement to reporters, saying they will “continue resistance as long as the occupation of Gaza continues and the blockade is imposed.”

George W. Bush Had Warned Gilani of US Attacks in Pakistan: UK Based Scholar
Outgoing US President George W. Bush directly warned Prime Minister Gilani during his first official visit to US that Pakistan would be attacked in the event of another 9/11 on the American soil, a UK based scholar claimed on Saturday.
Professor Anatol Liven made this disclosure during a public talk on ‘Obama’s Administration and the War on Terror’, organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISS) here. A large number of ambassadors, diplomats, intellectuals and students attended the talk and also raised their questions.
While further elaborating his point he said the US suffered deep wounds due to 9/11 attacks and it responded immediately out of the rising feelings of nationalism among the American people.
“I don’t know but can say if there is any other 9/11 in US, Pakistan may face limited American attack in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA),” he said.
Professor Anatol said upcoming Obama administration is likely to deploy more troops in Afghanistan, but it is expected that it would have to pull out finally because the coalition troops are now becoming ‘hostages’ in the war-torn country.
He said Pakistan cannot be bracketed with countries like Iraq and those who think this way are totally wrong, because there is a democratically elected government that has the ability to cope with the emerging challenges.
Showing a little bit pessimism about the appointment of Hillary Clinton as the US Secretary of State, he said she would follow those foreign policies introduced and promoted by the Clinton administration.
He said: “It will be a wishful thinking if any hopes that there would be any drastic change in the US foreign policy, but the Obama administration will keep in mind the economic recession that is generally dubbed as a direct result of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“Most American want to see America as the most influential country in the world despite the fact that they are generally not concerned about their foreign policies,” he said.
He underlined some facts that according to him would have a key role in the upcoming US foreign policy that include personal vision of Barrack Obama, capability of political system to introduce radical changes and understanding of the long-standing international issues.
To a question about the US-Iran relations, he opined the Obama administration would go for talks with Iran, adding it can also show some diplomatic concessions to Syria.
Replying to a question about prospects of US-China mutual relations, he said the Bush administration has been pursuing a very pragmatic approach and if the next administration continues to follow it, the US would certainly benefit from it.
ISS DG Tanvir Ahmad Khan while speaking on the occasion said Barrack Obama has been selling the idea of change and now the Gaza situation would be his first highly important diplomatic challenge soon after his oath-taking for the office of the president.
He said George W. Bush emerged as a warrior president and he never looked back on his policies after the 9/11 incidents that brought high level of aggression in the US foreign policies.
“US president George W. Bush declared a war on terror but it only encouraged the terrorist outfits to further expand their network in the world,” he said.

Iran demands Israeli pullout of Gaza
TEHRAN: Iran said on Sunday an Israeli ceasefire in Gaza is not enough to stop conflict with Palestinian militants and called for a full pullout of Israeli forces from the Hamas-run enclave.
“A mere halt of air, sea and ground attacks without the forces’ withdrawal from occupied positions is not sufficient to stop the clashes,” Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in a statement.
“The forces’ stay in these places is provocative per se and there is no guarantee for an end to the clashes,” he said.
At 2:00 am (0000 GMT) Sunday Israel unilaterally halted its 22-day offensive in Gaza which killed more than 1,300 Palestinians.
Mottaki said the decision indicated that Israeli “leaders have failed to achieve their declared objectives.”
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Saturday announced the end to offensive operations but said troops would stay in Gaza for the time being with orders to return fire if attacked.
Hamas, an Islamist group which has ruled Gaza since June 2007 and is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state, has said it will not accept the presence of a single Israeli soldier in the territory.

Bipasha Says My Work is My Life
Back in Srinagar to shoot for ‘Lamhaa’, Bipasha Basu says that she’s not going to risk her life for a film. This is what the dusky beauty says about the issue.
“Too much was made out of the whole thing (when Bips left the schedule in Srinagar earlier). Lamhaa is a difficult film. There was bound to be ups and downs. The producer and director knew why I left. A certain amount of security was promised. The first seven days were absolute chaos – nothing was organised and there was a lack of security,” she said.
“Yes, my work is my life. But then, I’ve a life beyond work. I’m not going to risk my life unnecessarily for any film. Who comes to hold your hand when you’re in pain? Let’s be optimistic,” she added.
She said, “This time, hopefully, we’ll shoot without any trouble. Let’s be sensible about it. Lamhaa is a sensible film and it would be difficult for audiences to follow (the language and behaviour of the local Kashmiri girls, which she’d planned to learn earlier). At the end of the day, we’re making a commercial film.”
“I love working with Rahul Dholakia (the director of Lamhaa ). He’s fun and funny. We’ve a strange equation. He looked at me at the start and asked if I am a method actor. I liked that. It showed the director had enough respect in me to first find out what kind of an actress I am,” she added.
