India Travel Alert: Department of State travel advisory for India

WASHINGTON: The Department of State warns U.S. citizens that there is a high threat of terrorism throughout India, and advises U.S. citizens traveling to or already in India to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness, especially during the end-of-year holidays until India’s Republic Day, January 26. This Travel Alert expires on January 31, 2009 and replaces that issued on December 4 to provide updated information regarding the security situation.

The November 26 terrorist attack in Mumbai was carried out at venues frequented by Americans. That attack killed 170 persons (including six Americans and 16 other non-Indians) and injured 300. Future attacks may also target public places frequented by Westerners, including in large cities and tourist areas. The State government in Goa has warned against beach parties and large gatherings on beaches and “open spaces” between December 23 and January 5.

The U.S. Mission is concerned that increased political tension between Pakistan and India may further complicate travel in areas near their already-sensitive border. In addition, the Department of Defense has increased its security requirements for all its employees visiting India.

Pakistan have no Tension from indian War preparation

They were responding to an intelligence report saying India may be preparing to strike against Pakistan in the wake of terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month that it blames on elements in Pakistan, the Daily Times repored.

According to the paper, the officials said that the Pakistani political and military leadership were fully aware of the grim situation on the Indian border.

Pakistan is keeping a close watch on the army deployment along the Line of Control in Kashmir and the activities of the Indian paramilitary Border Security Force, added the officials.

Forget Barack Obama’s staff making contact with a governor charged with corruption. What’s got everyone talking is the president-elect’s fine first form.

“FIT FOR OFFICE: Buff Bam is Hawaii hunk,” the New York Post gushed on its cover Tuesday above a photo of the future president strolling without a shirt in Hawaii. The Drudge Report called him “President Beefcake” while TMZ said the president-elect is “still humble enough to do laundry — ON HIS ABS!”

The photos were distributed by Bauer-Griffin, a photo agency more typically found on the corners of Hollywood. Photographer Chris Behnke simply strolled along the beach to get the shot, said agency co-owner Frank Griffin.

Obama “wasn’t hiding. He was completely out in the open,” Griffin said. “We didn’t by any stretch of the imagination expect to get the images we got.”

Griffin said Behnke had gone to the beach to get general views of the estate where Obama is vacationing, but instead found easy access to a view of the first family hitting the beach. “We use the expression, ‘He gave it up,’ ” Griffin said.

Members of the press corps traveling with Obama have been careful to respect his privacy. A spokesman traveling with Obama in Hawaii did not have immediate comment.

Griffin said he doesn’t expect his agency to stake out Washington on a regular basis, but added that Obama is “now the world’s biggest celebrity, just after Angelina and Brad. I guess they’re neck and neck right now.”

The celebrity description is apt, even if Obama faces a plummeting economy and two wars upon entering office. He’s seen as often on “Access Hollywood” as on the nightly news, and appears in “Us Weekly” with the regularity of a Jennifer Aniston.

And should we really be surprised?

When John F. Kennedy was pictured shirtless, there were media accounts fretting about the threshold we had crossed as a country, said David Greenberg, a professor at Rutgers University who is working on a history of political spin.

“There was John F. Kennedy by the beach, shirt off, this young, glamorous president,” Greenberg said. “So in a way this is 48 years old now that we’re having this.”

Since then we’ve had Lyndon B. Johnson lifting his shirt to show reporters his surgery scar and pictures of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton in swim trunks.

“It was kind of an erosion of what had been boundaries of formality between the president and the public,” Greenberg said. “We’ve had ‘boxers and briefs’ and a real acquaintanceship with a personal side, an uninhibited side, an unclothed side of the president.”

Obama’s physique has been well-exposed; photographers snapped him body surfing in Hawaii during the campaign. He was on the November cover of Men’s Health and detailed his workouts for the magazine: 45 minutes, six days a week, alternating weights and cardio.

Peter Moore, editor of Men’s Health, called Obama focused and disciplined about his workouts and what he eats. “I’d say he has a four-pack, rather than a six-pack, but most of us are working with a full keg,” he said.

He said Obama has buffed up since his days on the road during the campaign: “It’s heavy lifting to form your Cabinet, that’s for sure.”

Combine the increased interest in a president’s personal life with an increasing hunger for celebrity photos and a chiseled presidential body, and Obama becomes an obvious target for paparazzi. Apparently the Obama Girl isn’t the only one with a crush.

“Comments have been 95 percent positive, everything from ‘helllooo president’ to a 65-year-old lady who said she had to wait this long to find a president who she finds attractive,” Griffin said.

Earlier on his vacation, Obama was cranky as reporters snapped pictures through a chain-link fence and bushes, asking “OK, guys. Come on. … How many shots do you need?”

But such personal shots — dropping the girls off at school, hitting the gym, practicing his golf swing — also serve to humanize the president. Greenberg can see why Obama might allow the beach photos to be taken.

“I’m sure if he didn’t do it on purpose, he’s not exactly crying in his coffee about it,” he said. “I don’t see any downside.”

Well, maybe one: Might world leaders take the president less seriously if they can picture him in his underwear?

Fortunately, French President Nicolas Sarkozy beat him to it with stripped-down beach photos. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was pictured shirtless on a fishing expedition.

“In some ways we’re entering a more casual international environment, too,” Greenberg said. “But if he’s sitting down with Putin, he has to project gravitas.”

Griffin has submitted his photo agency for credentials for Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20. He said it’s too soon to estimate how much Bauer-Griffin will earn from the beach photos “within tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands.”

“I have a feeling that the president-elect kind of accepts this, that it goes with the territory,” Griffin said. “He’s become a celebrity. I think the pictures humanize him and show that he’s just like the rest of us.”

India Fail to Provide any Suspects List which connect with Mumbai strikes

ISLAMABAD: The visiting Interpol Chief, Ronald Noble has said that India hasn’t provided any list of suspected terrorists relating to the Mumbai attacks.

Following a meeting with the Interior Advisor, Rehman Malik, Ronald Noble told the media that Pakistan was itself a terrorist inflicted country and Benazir Bhutto became a victim of it. “We are satisfied over the cooperation extended by Pakistan relating to Mumbai attacks, as Pakistan investigation agencies are cooperative with Interpol and we are thankful to the interior advisor for his assistance”, he said. He further said that none other than Pakistan till today cooperated more with the Interpol and added that Pakistan was the most proactive associate of Interpol. He said the Interpol has also the same information, which you possess. Ronald Noble said that Pakistan was cooperating with the Interpol and the world community should also cooperate with Pakistan.

Earlier, Interior Advisor, Rehman Malik said that Pakistan and India both were the victims of terrorism. He also apprised of Pakistan’s difficulties relating to terrorism in his meeting with Ronald Noble, Rehman Malik said that Interpol team was on routine visit to Pakistan and nothing was discussed relating to the illegal immigrants with them. He said that there are set procedures for the handing over of the wanted person to any country and, “We are prepared to extend all possible cooperation to India relating to the Mumbai attacks, we will bring terrorists to justice,” he vowed.

Taliban says it will defend Pakistan

Hunted by the US and NATO forces for committing acts of terror in Afghanistan, the Taliban on Tuesday (December 23) said they would back the Pakistan Army by deploying hundreds of suicide bombers in case of any military action with India.

Claiming that “thousands of our well-armed militants are ready to fight alongside the army if any war is imposed on Pakistan,” chief of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, Baitullah Mehsud, told The News daily by phone from an undisclosed location.

Hundreds of would-be bombers had been “given suicide jackets and explosive-laden vehicles for protection of the border in case of any aggression by the Indian forces”, he said.

“The time had come, to wage a real jihad that the Taliban had been waiting for,” Mehsud, for whom the Pakistani and US forces are on the look out claimed.

“We know very well that the visible and invisible enemies of the country have been planning to weaken this lone Islamic nuclear power. But the mujahideen will foil all such nefarious designs of our enemies,” he said.

This is for the first time Mehsud has admitted that Taliban has marshalled thousands of fighters close to the Afghan-Pak border and where Pakistani army has launched a major operation to flush them out.

Mehsud said people might question how the Taliban would fight alongside the Pakistan Army when the militants had been fighting the force for a long time.

“Therefore, I want to make it clear that the army was acting otherwise (in the past). But now it would fight for the protection and survival of the country, which is why we will support them,” Mehsud said.

Mehsud, who was accused by former President Pervez Musharraf of masterminding the assassination of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto in December last year, significantly said the Taliban would defend the country’s frontier with Afghanistan in the event of hostilities with India.

He said he wanted to “assure the nation, government and army that they should not worry about Pakistan’s western borders with Afghanistan” as “thousands of his armed fighters had already been deployed to safeguard the strategically important frontier”.

Taliban fighters are ready to fight under the army’s command, he said, but remarked it would be better for the military to “give them a separate sector or specify special targets” for the militants”.

Tensions have escalated in the region after India blamed Pakistan-elements for the Mumbai terror attacks, which killed over 180 people. India has asked Pakistan to take action against elements, including the Lashker-e-Taiba terror group.

Though India has said war is not an option, Pakistan’s top leaders, including Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, have said the country is prepared to face any aggression on the eastern border. Several Taliban commanders have pledged their support to the Pakistan Army in the event of hostilities with India.

No Compromise With Al-Qaeda, Taliban: Kayani

Lahore: Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General, Ashfaq Kayani has said that Pakistan realises threat posed by militant outfits like, Al Qaeda and the Taliban, adding that the nation is in no mood to compromise with them. Kayani had a discussion with the US Marine Commander, James Conway, over the current security conditions, a private TV channel reported.

The two military officials are believed to have discussed `overall regional security’, US drone attacks in Pakistan and US-Pakistan military co-operation on the Pak-Afghan border.

General Kayani reportedly told the American commander that security along with the Pakistan-Afghanistan border was the responsibility of all stakeholders, and not just Pakistan.

The Army chief also assured Conway that security conditions for the NATO supplies, going through Khyber, would be beefed up. (ANI)

Car bomb kills 1 woman, wounds 5 in Lahore

LAHORE: Blast rocked GOR area in Shadman locality of Lahore on Wednesday morning killing a woman and wounding five persons were wounded, reports said.

According to reports a bomb device was planted in a vehicle near a water tank in the area, which went off with loud blast.

Police, bomb disposal experts and rescue and relief teams have reached to the area and the injured were transferred to hospitals.

A woman identified as Farzana was killed in the incident, while her husband was seriously wounded along with four others.

A power transformer was also exploded after the blast.

According to sources a Shahzor vehicle with bogus government number plate of LHO 2513, was used for the blast. The bomb was exploded in the government officers’ residential area of Lahore near the house of a doctor. The blast also damaged a wall of the house.

Police have cordoned off the area for investigations. According to bomb disposal experts eight to 10 kilogram explosives were used in the bomb devices.

Kasab To Come Live on TV

New Delhi: Apparently looking to call off Pakistan’s bluff in front of the international community, investigators are now looking at the possibility of a worldwide live broadcast of Ajmal Kasab’s confession on his role in the Mumbai attacks and also reveal details about his antecedents.

What has precipitated thinking towards such a bold step, as claimed by leading English daily, is Pakistan’s continuous rejection of all concrete evidences provided by India about the complicity of Pak based groups in the recent terror attacks.

Moreover, India has also revealed names of all the ten terrorists involved in the Mumbai attacks.

A high-level meeting was convened in New Delhi, yesterday, to look at the pros and cons of bringing Kasab live on TV and as per reports senior intelligence officials and home ministry officials are positively inclined towards the bold gambit.

However, the final decision lies with the Centre and reports claim that it will announce the date –when Kasab will be live on TV- shortly.

The development comes even as Kasab’s remand ends today and is due to be produced in court. Incidentally, he still has no lawyer as many of those who came forward to defend later though otherwise owing to the angry reactions from rightwing organisations.

This would be first such move of its kind by any country in which the live confession of a terrorist will be broadcast live across the world. To make the confession comprehensible, Kasab’s confession will also have English subtitles.

The move reflects Indian government’s frustration about the defiant attitude of Pakistan, even as India faced the worst ever terror strike. Moreover, the move also aims to further corner the Yousuf Raja Gilani government and prove before the international community that Pakistan has repeatedly failed to live up to its commitments against terrorism.

Indian authorities have been providing substantial evidence about the nationality of those who attacked Mumbai and their masterminds but Pakistan has been categorically rejecting to acknowledge the fact that all those involved in the incident were actually its citizens, who were especially trained for the purpose by militant organisations operating from its soil.

China fails to back Pak on Mumbai attack

The Chinese foreign ministry has finally spoken on the India-Pakistan-China axis amidst the rising tensions over the Mumbai attacks. However, China has refused to come out in open support of Pakistan over the Mumbai terror attacks. In fact adopting a neutral stance China today (Dec 23) appealed to India and Pakistan to maintain calm and work together to investigate the “cause” of the terror attack on Mumbai and “identify its mastermind.”

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang on Tuesday (Dec 23) expressed the hope that India and Pakistan will cooperate with each other in the investigations into the Mumbai attack. He also suggested that the two countries make “joint efforts” to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Qin said that the question of “where the terrorists are from” is a matter that will be known after proper investigations. He was replying to a question about India’s concerns that terrorists in the Mumbai attack came from Pakistan and Islamabad’s refusal to accept it.

But he skirted specific queries about China’s views Pakistan’s efforts to book the terrorists or track down their sources and supporters. He did not reply to questions on whether China was talking with Pakistan over the nature of investigations or it wished to take a stand on the issue.

It seemed clear that Beijing wished to stick to platitudes even after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the international community to apply pressure on Pakistan and foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee said New Delhi’s patience is already strained.

“We hope that the two countries can have dialogue and consultation to solve relevant issues and improve their relations as major countries in South Asia,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a press conference today. The two countries can “contribute to peace and stability in the region” by cooperating with each other, he said.

Pakistan, which signed an agreement on military cooperation with China on December 15, needs Chinese help today more than ever. China observers say Beijing sees in the current situation an opportunity to play a more important role in the region that it ever did. This is the time for Beijing to try and wean Islamabad as far away from Washington as possible.

Incidentally, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has confirmed her plans to visit Beijing in the new year, Qin said. But the exact dates have not been announced.

China observers said Beijing needed Pakistani support to ensure that Islamic terrorists do not enhance their campaign in Xinjiang province, which is a hotbed of separatism spearheaded by forces trained in Pakistan. China is constantly worried about the East Turkmenistan movement in Xinjiang, where terrorists are battling to carve out a separate nation.

Beijing also feels India would be careful about stroking the fires along the border with Pakistan as long as there is a perception that it will back Islamabad. In fact, Pakistan’s defiance of international pressures on the Mumbai attack issue is partly explained by its faith in China, its “all weather friend”.

Chinese leaders, who shared a long and cosy relationship with former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, have been less than comfortable with the newly elected leadership in Islamabad. The official Chinese media has been harping on the many challenges faced by the new Pakistani leadership in maintaining peace at home as well as feeding its poor millions.

But Beijing would still make the most of the new situation to enhance its influence in Asia at a time when the US is engaged in settling down to a new regime and battling the economic crisis, sources said. The developments in South Asia come at a time when China has managed to resolve many of its long-held differences with Japan and in on the way to solve its problems in Taiwan.

Dozens injured in clashes in held Kashmir

SIRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the seventh and final phase of so-called assembly elections was marked with fierce clashes between the Indian police personnel and anti-polls demonstrators in Srinagar, today on Wednesday.

At least two-dozen persons, including two photojournalists were injured when the troops resorted to brute force to disperse demonstrators at Tainkipora, Chattabal, Bemina, Batamaloo, Chanapora, Natipora, Nawab Bazar, Eidgah, S R Gunj, Barzalla, Rambagh, Aaloocha Bagh, Malarata and Malpora.

All roads leading to Srinagar were sealed to thwart Lal Chowk March, call for which had been given by the Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee. All the cities and towns of the occupied territory gave a deserted look due to crippling strike against holding of sham polls.

The authorities continued to keep under house arrest the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and senior Hurriyet leaders, Syed Ali Gilani, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Agha Syed Hassan al-Moosvi, Fazl Haq Qureshi, Yasmeen Raja and Mian Abdul Qayoom.

The polling in almost all areas of Srinagar remained very low and not a single person turned out for voting at many places particularly in Nawa Kadal, Nowhatta, Khawaja Bazar, Nawab Bazar, Bohri Kadal, Saraf Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Noorbagh and other adjoining areas.

The occupation authorities arranged bogus voting and coerced people to vote in Bemina and Nawa Kadal.

People in Maisuma made several attempts to take out anti-polls processions but were intercepted by Indian troops.
